According to Mr. President, his girls (and his wife) have adjusted very well to their new home. "'What's interesting is actually how unimpressed they are with it,' the president added, laughing. 'They are unchanged.'" ...so far, at least. They seem to be keeping busy with school and maintaining their same routines, according to other sources as well. It's interesting that though they are still pretty young, they seem to be put in the spotlight often as sweet, stylish, sensible, intelligent girls who deserve admiration for handling their dad's situation so maturely. Not to take anything away from them because I could imagine it is a difficult change, but does anyone know if Fox News loves them as much as some of the other stations do? This entire article in the "Politics" tab was about Obama's single comment on his daughters. It's a human interest story, I suppose, but at least tell us something we didn't know..?

As I was browsing the politics tab of the New York Times, I found a very similar trend of human interest stories involving the new presidential family. There is an article called "Mrs. Obama Speaks Out About Her Household," printed on 3/21, which entirely consists of anecdotes about her fashion choices, love of french fries, and the fact that she has to work out constantly to "keep those hips from spreading." Absolutely no news can be drawn from this "politics" article, unless maybe you want to count the fact that Barack Obama doesn't like Michelle's silver belt, or that the two like to poke fun at each other's outfits.
ReplyDeleteThis piece is also interesting when viewed through the "good mother" myth discussed earlier in the semester. The reinforcement of Michelle Obama as a maternal lady who faces all of the same personal issues as women world-wide serves to strengthen this myth in our everyday media. Not once in the article is Michelle's involvement her new community mentioned, nor is any sort of politics--despite the Times's labeling of the article as a "political" piece.
